The sides agreed to maintain contact

MOSCOW, December 15. /TASS/. The presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, have held a phone conversation to discuss various international issues, including the Korean nuclear problem, the Kremlin press service said on Friday.

"On the US initiative, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump have held a phone conversation. Acute issues of bilateral relations, as well as the situation in crisis hotspots worldwide were discussed, with an emphasis placed on settling the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue," the press service said in a statement.

As was noted by Rachel Madow: this was the 2nd phone conversation between the two that we learned about from Russian sources. The administration here never made these calls public till Russia did

I personally want them to be speaking. This is one of the major reasons Trump was elected to improve American relations with Russia. It appears the Russian leadership at least respects him or at least views them as someone they can work with.

As to why the calls were not made "public," organizational leaders typically do not make all of their dealings "public." To do so is a tedious time consuming process and the consumers of such information do not have the background or expertise to understand such things. Additionally, the anti-Russian hysteria on the part of the media and certain US has long crossed over into clinical insanity. As such, given how such things can be misconstrued and would be misconstrued one can certainly understand the reluctance of team Trump to make these things "public."

As to why the Russians would go "public" with these, I think it is two-fold. 1.)It is a "thumb in the eye" of the media. Essentially they are telling the media that in spite of your hysterical insanity adults are prevailing and their is nothing you can do to stop it. 2.)The Russians may not fully realize the level of depravity and insanity to which American "elites" and the news media have fallen to. As such, they are trying to send a signal to America's elites of their desire for improved relations by demonstrating they are maintaining contacts with top Administration officials in spite of the insanity of the media and certain "elites." Not realizing the level of depravity the media and certain "elites" have sunk to they think this is a fruitful avenue to pursue.

As for point 2, the Russian leadership will figure this out eventually. So far, their actions have been remarkably subdued given what has been done to them. Once they fully realize who and what they are dealing with in terms of the media and certain American "elites." their responses will not be nearly so subdued. I just hope and pray America can change its leadership enough to change course before the Russians figure this out and we can take the necessary steps to mend relations.

Note to America's "elites" and the news media: your presidential election is not important enough and you are not important enough that Russians or their leaders are going to spend much time or effort worrying about you. There is a mental disorder that describes people who think they are more important than they really are. America's leadership class is badly in need of psychotherapy.
